Java Programming Foundations

This unit introduces students to the Java development environment, core language syntax, control flow, methods, exception handling, and foundational object-oriented concepts. It also covers essential collections, simple algorithms, basic concurrency, and event-driven UI concepts to prepare learners for more advanced software design and application development in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate installation, configuration, and use of the Java Development Kit and a text editor/IDE to compile, run, and debug simple Java programs (e.g., Hello, World!).
• Apply core Java constructs—variables, arithmetic and boolean expressions, control structures (if/else, while), methods, and exception handling—to design, implement, and test console-based programs.
• Apply object-oriented programming principles by declaring classes, fields and methods (including static), inheritance, abstract classes, inner classes, and packages to create modular, reusable Java components.
• Analyze and implement fundamental data structures and algorithms—including arrays, ArrayList, LinkedList, Maps, generics, simple sorting/searching, and recursion—and demonstrate basic concurrency and event-driven concepts using threads and JavaFX events/stages.
