Ideas, Revolutions, and Global Change

This capstone unit examines transformative ideas, movements, and documents that reshaped societies from the medieval world through the twentieth century. Students compare religions, scientific and political theories, exploration, and landmark civic texts to trace cause-and-effect, continuity and change, and the global impact of key turning points.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the causes and global consequences of major turning points (e.g., exploration, abolition, revolutions, industrialization, nuclear warfare) using evidence from the unit’s case studies.
• Evaluate the influence of religious and philosophical systems (Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Enlightenment thought, Marxism, Darwinism) on social, political, and scientific developments across regions and eras.
• Demonstrate chronological reasoning by constructing and synthesizing timelines that link unit events (e.g., 1492, 1776, 1807, 1893, 1945) and explain patterns of continuity and change.
• Analyze and interpret primary-source texts (e.g., Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, selections from Das Kapital and On the Origin of Species, foundational religious summaries) to make evidence-based claims about historical perspectives and civic ideals.
