Managing Classroom Culture and Practice

This unit prepares first‑year teachers to establish and sustain a safe, productive, and inviting classroom by focusing on routines, rules, seating, motivation, grading, and emergency preparedness. It also develops professional communication and ethical practices for interacting with students, families, substitutes, and supervisors, building on foundational concepts and preparing candidates to design instruction and assessments in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Design a coherent classroom management plan that includes clear rules, seating arrangements, routines, substitute plans, and strategies for creating an inviting learning space
• Apply communication protocols to engage families, sponsors, and administrators by drafting phone‑home scripts, sponsorship procedures, and approaches for resolving supervisor conflicts
• Demonstrate professional responsibilities and ethical conduct through role‑plays and reflections that address boundaries, virtual office hours, grading practices, and responses to misinterpreted comments
• Evaluate and develop safety and student‑support procedures by creating response plans for injuries/emergencies, accommodations for diverse learners, and motivation strategies informed by student characteristics
