Empires, Ideas, and Technologies

This unit examines how military innovations, state-building strategies, and belief systems shaped classical and early medieval societies across Eurasia and the Americas. Students will engage with primary and material sources to trace how empires rose and fell, how philosophies and religions influenced social institutions, and how record-keeping and cultural practices developed—building on prior foundations and preparing learners for later comparative and modern historical analysis.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how military technologies, leadership decisions, and administrative strategies contributed to the formation, expansion, and collapse of empires using case studies such as Assyria, Alexander’s successors, and the Western Roman Empire.
• Compare and contrast major belief systems and philosophical traditions (e.g., Confucianism, Judaism, early Christian texts, and other Eastern philosophies) and evaluate their influence on social institutions, law, and governance.
• Evaluate primary and material sources—including inscriptions, artifacts, skeletal analysis, religious texts, and administrative records—to assess credibility, bias, and utility for reconstructing historical narratives.
• Demonstrate historical thinking by synthesizing diverse evidence into a coherent written or multimedia argument that explains cultural practices, record-keeping developments, and patterns of continuity and change across regions in the classical era.
