Prototyping Sensors and Circuits

This unit develops hands-on skills for integrating sensors, motors, and passive components into Arduino-based prototypes. Students will install and configure the Arduino toolchain, read datasheets and resistor codes, assemble and solder shields, and implement analog sensing, smoothing, calibration, and motor control to prepare for capstone project work.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze component datasheets and resistor color codes to determine correct wiring, voltage/current limits, and required pull-up/pull-down or biasing values for sensors and actuators
• Apply safe workspace practices and soldering/shield-assembly techniques to build and troubleshoot a functional Arduino prototype or shield
• Demonstrate sensor integration and signal processing by implementing analog input reading, smoothing/filtering algorithms, calibration routines, and motor speed control in Arduino sketches
• Evaluate and select appropriate modules, libraries, and installation steps (e.g., Adafruit components, Arduino IDE) and document the prototype design and configuration for project handoff
