Advanced Drone Operations and Compliance

This unit integrates legal, safety, technical, and business knowledge to prepare students for complex drone missions and commercial practice. Students will examine proposed and current regulations, privacy and security concerns, specialized mission procedures, and the fundamentals of running compliant drone services.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze federal, state, and proposed FAA regulations (including commercial operator, micro-drone, and ‘fly over people’ rules) to determine legal operating parameters, waivers, and reporting requirements for varied mission types.
• Apply privacy, security, and safety best practices — including data-sharing policies, flying-while-impaired prohibitions, battery management, and restrictions on flying over people/facilities — to develop compliant preflight and post-flight operational plans.
• Demonstrate preflight inspections, battery checks, selection of flight modes/autopilot, and emergency response procedures across at least three scenario-based missions (e.g., news capture, search-and-rescue, delivery).
• Evaluate commercial opportunities, insurance and claims processes, equipment procurement options, and ethical considerations to produce a compliant business proposal and risk-mitigation plan for a drone service.
