Marketing, Management, and Animal Behavior

This capstone unit teaches students how to finish and present cattle for show and sale, manage the financial and operational aspects of a small beef enterprise, avoid common production mistakes, and interpret bovine behavior for safer handling and improved welfare. It integrates animal care and business skills from earlier units and prepares students to operate, market, and evaluate a beginning beef-cattle enterprise.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze market channels, sale methods, and animal quality factors to develop a rationale-based pricing and marketing plan for selling beef cattle
• Apply recordkeeping, budgeting, and basic business-planning tools to produce a simple profit-and-loss projection and marketing timeline for a small beef operation
• Demonstrate humane show- and sale-preparation techniques, safe low-stress handling, and presentation protocols appropriate for fairs and auctions
• Evaluate common production mistakes and unusual bovine behaviors, and recommend corrective, preventive, and welfare-centered management actions to reduce risk and improve herd performance
