This unit introduces systems thinking, resilience, and the role of artificial intelligence and big tech in shaping sustainable agriscience and urban ecosystems. Students explore AI basics, trustworthy and human-centered design, municipal and energy-efficiency use cases, and begin planning workforce and community strategies for AI-enabled sustainability projects.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze interconnections among ecological, urban, and technological systems to identify resilience challenges and sustainability trade-offs using agriscience and municipal case examples
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge of artificial intelligence and big tech by summarizing core concepts, typical applications, and likely impacts on natural resource management and municipal services
- Evaluate trustworthy AI principles, ethical considerations, and human-centered interaction by critiquing at least two AI use cases for municipal efficiency or energy management
- Apply systems-thinking and future-skills planning to produce a short roadmap (6–12 months) that outlines workforce skills, community engagement, and energy-efficiency actions for an AI-enabled sustainability initiative
