Functional Data I/O and Processing

This unit develops practical skills for modeling, loading, and transforming data using functional programming in Haskell and complementary Python tools. Students will work with types, file and command-line I/O (including binary and audio data), apply core list-processing techniques, and practice debugging to prepare for more advanced data analysis and system integration in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compose algebraic and parameterized types to model datasets and implement pattern matching and recursion for list-based transformations in Haskell
• Apply file and command-line I/O techniques in Haskell and Python to load, save, and ensure access to text and binary datasets, and use Jupyter notebook magic functions to integrate workflows
• Demonstrate mapping, reduction, and higher-order function strategies to perform data transformations and basic analyses, including handling binary and audio data with appropriate libraries
• Evaluate and resolve common Haskell and Python installation and runtime errors by testing environments, diagnosing failures, and applying debugging and quick-fix techniques
