Foundations of Human Structure and Function

This unit introduces foundational anatomical and physiological concepts, including basic chemistry, cell and tissue organization, homeostasis, and an overview of major organ systems (integumentary, skeletal, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, immune, and reproductive). It reinforces prior science skills and prepares students for deeper system-focused and clinical applications in subsequent units through hands-on lab work, case analysis, and anatomy/physiology literacy.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and apply anatomical terminology and perspective (directional, regional, sectional) to correctly label body diagrams and models with at least 80% accuracy
• Demonstrate understanding of basic biological chemistry, ions, and cellular processes by interpreting simple physiological data and constructing explanations of feedback loops that maintain homeostasis
• Evaluate structure–function relationships across major organ systems by comparing tissue types, gross anatomy, and integrated physiological roles in written and lab-based assessments
• Apply laboratory and clinical inquiry skills to safely collect/handle basic specimens, use anatomical models and microscopes, and communicate findings using appropriate scientific vocabulary and conventions
