This unit introduces core concepts and practical skills for establishing a functioning home recording environment. Students will learn how to evaluate and choose gear, physically connect and configure studio components, operate basic mixing hardware, and integrate MIDI/electronic instruments into a DAW to prepare for multitrack recording and mixing in subsequent units.

- Analyze different home recording goals and room/acoustic considerations to determine how workflow, space, and project scope influence equipment and setup choices
- Apply technical and budgetary criteria to select appropriate microphones, audio interfaces, monitors/headphones, and DAW configurations for specific musical styles and project sizes
- Demonstrate correct physical setup and signal routing for a basic home studio, including cable types, gain staging, patching to an audio interface or mixer, and configuring monitoring paths
- Evaluate MIDI controllers and electronic instrument options and integrate a MIDI device and virtual instrument into a DAW session, including device setup, channel routing, synchronization, and basic troubleshooting
