Foundations of Building Information Modeling

This unit introduces core BIM concepts, vocabulary, and the rationale for adopting BIM, including the meaning of building, information, and modeling, maturity levels, collaboration paradigms, open standards, and introductory technologies. Learners will practice interpreting requirements, completing basic BIM checklists and glossaries, and preparing a starter BIM strategy to support hands-on modeling and coordination in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the components of BIM (building, information, modeling) and compare BIM maturity levels and collaboration models by classifying examples from a provided project scenario.
• Demonstrate comprehension of BIM requirements, open standards, and BIM object concepts by completing a project-based checklist and glossary for a sample small building project.
• Apply introductory BIM technologies and authoring tool workflows to organize a simple digital model dataset and produce a basic model deliverable that meets stated project information requirements.
• Evaluate people-led change management and communication strategies for BIM adoption, including contractor-led coordination and the use of digital catalysts, and recommend a starter BIM strategy for a hypothetical firm.
