Designing Sustainable Travel Experiences

This unit explores experiential forms of sustainable travel—voluntourism, educational and cultural tours, activity-based travel, regenerative tourism, carbon offsetting, low‑impact transport, and sustainable accommodations—so students can assess and choose options that benefit host communities and environments. Building on foundational principles from earlier units, students practice evaluating programs, planning low‑impact itineraries, and designing regenerative or volunteer project plans in preparation for the capstone unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the ethical, cultural, economic, and environmental implications of voluntourism, educational travel, and activity-based tours by comparing case studies against community-benefit and sustainability criteria.
• Evaluate sustainability claims and certifications for accommodations, transportation options, and carbon offsets using evidence-based rubrics and justify selections with documented criteria.
• Apply selection and planning criteria to create a 3-day sustainable travel itinerary that integrates low-impact transport, appropriate lodging, meaningful activities (e.g., language study, cultural or photography tours, sport), and offset strategies to meet stated community and environmental goals.
• Demonstrate the ability to design a small regenerative or volunteer project plan with measurable objectives, stakeholder engagement steps, and monitoring strategies to ensure a ‘leave better than you found it’ outcome.
