Crime Types, Causes, and Responses

This unit examines major categories of crime, the social and individual causes that help explain criminal behavior, and the criminal justice system responses from investigation through punishment. Students build on foundational concepts to evaluate investigative challenges, theories of crime, victimization patterns, and institutional roles in prevention, prosecution, and corrections.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major categories of crime (e.g., homicide, property crime, assault/battery, white-collar crime, organized crime, terrorism, juvenile offenses) by differentiating legal definitions, elements, and investigative challenges for each
• Evaluate criminological theories (including strain, biological/genetic, feminist, and cultural approaches) and apply them to case evidence and historical examples such as the Sam Sheppard case to explain patterns of criminal behavior
• Demonstrate knowledge of justice system roles and procedures by outlining law enforcement strategies and special techniques, federal–local coordination, court processes, defense and prosecution functions, and corrections placement including juvenile distinctions
• Apply victimization analysis and cost–benefit reasoning to identify populations at risk, estimate social and economic costs of crime, and recommend prevention, treatment (e.g., drug treatment), or enforcement responses for different crime types
