Crime Theories, Courts, and Responses

This unit integrates criminological theory with courtroom roles, corrections, and applied responses to a range of offenses and threats. Students explore causes of crime, adjudication processes, forensic and victim services roles, and prevention and policy strategies to prepare for advanced study and vocational applications in the justice system.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major criminological theories (e.g., rational choice, social learning, social control, peacemaking, biological explanations, leftist realism) to explain causes of criminal behavior and to identify implications for prevention and policy
• Evaluate criminal justice processes and decision points (trial and appellate judges, plea bargaining, probation, juvenile versus adult processing, correctional challenges) to determine how legal choices shape case outcomes and community safety
• Apply forensic and investigative practices (forensic science, computer forensics) and victim services principles to develop case plans that ensure appropriate evidence handling, chain of custody, and victim-centered supports
• Demonstrate strategies for addressing specialized crimes and threats (drug abuse, hate crimes, sexual assault, organized crime, terrorism, mental illness) by proposing balanced policy interventions and community-based response plans
