Crafting Focus, Character, and Dialogue

This unit develops the core elements that make a play breathe: a focused dramatic premise, fully realized characters, purposeful dialogue, and practical staging decisions. Students will produce targeted scene drafts and openings that balance artistic intention with cast, audience, and production realities, preparing work for peer feedback and further development in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze story focus and central conflict to produce a concise dramatic premise and a one-page scene outline that supports that focus
• Apply character-development techniques to construct at least two fully realized characters with clear objectives, backstories, relationships, and contradictions
• Demonstrate effective use of dialogue by composing a complete scene that employs subtext, distinct voice, beats, and interruptions to reveal character and advance plot
• Evaluate practical staging, cast-size, and audience considerations to revise a scene opening and select an effective beginning for the play
