Career Advancement and Life Skills

This unit prepares learners to sustain and advance their careers by developing practical job-search strategies, professional networking and personal-branding skills, and long-term planning for finances, well-being, and alternative employment pathways. Building on earlier units in career exploration and workplace skills, students practice real-world applications—such as LinkedIn optimization, interviewing and negotiation, retirement planning, and managing mental health—to create an actionable career roadmap.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze personal strengths, labor-market information, and internship/volunteer experiences to produce a 12-month career-advancement plan that identifies at least three measurable action steps and contingency options.
• Apply professional networking and job-search techniques—including optimizing a LinkedIn profile, attending networking events, responding to job ads, and leveraging special opportunities—to secure at least two informational interviews or job leads.
• Demonstrate effective professional communication, ethical decision-making, and personal resilience by completing two scored role-plays (first impressions and negotiation) and submitting a written well-being plan that addresses stress management, procrastination, and mental-health resources.
• Evaluate and compare employment pathways (private sector, government, and entrepreneurship) and financial options (employer retirement plans and individual retirement accounts) and produce a decision brief with a cost-benefit analysis and recommended next steps.
