This capstone unit expands foundational Java concepts into practical software development practices, covering reference types, operators, access control, packages/imports, modules, and simple GUI class creation. It also prepares students for ongoing professional growth by surveying developer resources, user groups, job-search strategies, and pathways for continued learning and contribution to the Java ecosystem.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare Java reference types and primitive types, explaining how operators and assignment affect object identity, state, and behavior
• Apply encapsulation and access-control mechanisms (public, private, protected, package access) and import/package/module organization to design classes that appropriately expose or hide members
• Demonstrate the creation and reuse of modular code, including declaring imports, defining simple modules/packages, and implementing a basic GUI class to present program functionality
• Evaluate professional development resources and strategies—such as user groups, documentation, news sources, sample code repositories, and job-search techniques—and create a personal plan for continued learning and career advancement in Java development
