Foundations of First-Year Teaching

This unit introduces the practical, professional, and organizational skills new teachers need to survive and succeed in their first year. Learners examine school culture and policies, establish classroom management and recordkeeping systems, develop basic lesson- and assessment-planning artifacts, and create communication and health/safety protocols that prepare them for deeper instructional work in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze school culture, policies, and stakeholder expectations by comparing realistic scenarios and citing site-level rules to justify classroom decisions.
• Apply classroom management and organizational strategies by designing a behavior management plan with proportional consequences, a duty schedule, and a recordkeeping system for attendance, grading, and pacing.
• Demonstrate instructional readiness by producing a one-week lesson plan package that includes differentiated supports, a grading rubric, and at least one standards-aligned classroom activity or assessment.
• Develop professional communication and safety protocols by creating templates for interactions with administrators, coworkers, and parents, configuring a digital learning platform entry, and outlining basic health/safety and professional-boundary procedures.
