Foundations of Musical Theatre

This unit introduces students to the history, forms, and creative team of musical theatre while building basic theatre literacy and career awareness. Students explore the origins and types of musicals, the roles and workflows of production personnel, and the physical spaces and rehearsal practices that support a staged musical, preparing them for deeper performance and technical study in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the origins, evolution, and defining characteristics of major musical-theatre forms (e.g., operetta, revue, book musical) and cite at least three historical examples discussed in class.
• Demonstrate understanding of the responsibilities and workflows of key production roles (composer, librettist, director, casting director, costume designer, stage crew) by accurately matching roles to tasks in a simulated production scenario.
• Apply basic theatre literacy by identifying stage areas, seating configurations, and elements of an overture/intermission, and by producing a simple rehearsal plan that sequences Act One scenes and associated technical needs.
• Evaluate local and global career pathways in musical theatre by researching and presenting two professional job roles in the students’ hometowns and mapping the skills, training, and typical entry steps required for each.
