Advanced Notation, Modulation, and Context

This capstone unit synthesizes advanced notation, transposition and modulation techniques, score reading across formats, and the relationship between music theory and historical movements. Students apply these skills to real scores, improvise and reharmonize material, and analyze how composers, technologies, and social movements shaped musical language.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze piano, vocal, short-score, and tablature examples to identify compound intervals, mixed rhythmic values (including dotted notes and ties), figured bass notation, and Nashville Number System charts.
• Apply transposition and modulation procedures to re-notate melodies and chord progressions in new keys and produce functional cadences using conventional harmonic analysis.
• Demonstrate sight-reading and interpretation of mixed-format scores and improvise short, theory-informed motifs over provided chord progressions while using chord-scale relationships and the Nashville Number System.
• Evaluate the influence of selected composers, technological innovations, and sociopolitical movements (e.g., Schoenberg, Partch, Stockhausen, Moog, The Rite of Spring, Nueva Canción, Civil Rights, Estonia, Arab Spring) on notation, form, and harmonic language, citing specific score or recording examples.
