Operational Risk and Safety Management

This unit develops practical competence in identifying, assessing, and controlling workplace hazards and in selecting and implementing safety management systems. Students will translate official guidance and legal duties into risk assessments, emergency procedures, KPIs, and a concise health and safety policy to manage transport, machinery, electrical, fire, chemical, radiation, and human-factor risks.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze official guidance and relevant legislation to determine employer and worker responsibilities and to define the scope of workplace health and safety requirements
• Apply systematic risk assessment techniques to identify, evaluate, and prioritize hazards across domains (transport, machinery, electricity, fire, chemicals, radiation) and recommend controls using the hierarchy of controls
• Evaluate and select an appropriate safety management system, measurable KPIs, and emergency procedures, and draft a concise health and safety policy aligned with legal duties and organizational context
• Demonstrate effective communication of assessment outcomes by preparing stakeholder-facing risk assessment reports, incident response plans, and control implementation checklists that address human factors and regulatory language
