Intermediate Java: OOP, APIs, Concurrency

This unit advances learners from foundational Java toward building robust, modular applications by focusing on object-oriented design, core platform APIs, collections, basic concurrency, and introductory JavaFX event-driven UIs. Students will apply language features (constructors, access control, overloading, cloning), work with collections and generics, use common APIs (BigDecimal, StringBuilder, date-time), coordinate threads, and create simple JavaFX interfaces.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and select appropriate Java collection types and generics to store and manipulate data (arrays, LinkedList, TreeMap), including use of wildcard-type parameters and iteration/access patterns
• Apply object-oriented design principles and class-level features—constructors, access modifiers, this/super, method overloading, cloning, and instance management—to create robust, encapsulated classes
• Demonstrate proficiency with core Java APIs by performing BigDecimal arithmetic and rounding, using StringBuilder/StringBuffer and CharSequence, parsing and creating date-time objects, and working with the Java Module System
• Implement concurrent and event-driven behaviors by creating cooperating threads (including lambda parameter passing) and designing JavaFX interfaces that handle events, use controls (radio buttons, combo boxes), and display alerts
