Designing Equitable Futures

This capstone unit synthesizes lessons on the DEI reckoning, next-generation influence, and inclusive design by applying futures-thinking and decolonizing practices to software and systems development. Students translate critique into practice by modeling alternative futures, producing future-proof inclusive design strategies, and creating actionable roadmaps for equitable product outcomes.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze historical DEI failures in technology by identifying at least three systemic causes and citing unit case studies to explain their downstream effects on users and product outcomes
• Apply inclusive-design frameworks and future-modeling techniques to produce two distinct future scenarios and derive a prioritized set of at least five actionable design requirements that address equity and accessibility
• Evaluate organizational and cognitive barriers to inclusive practice and formulate a three-part intervention strategy (policy, team structure, and educational tactic) to reduce monolithic thinking and increase collaborative decision-making
• Demonstrate leadership and advocacy by creating a roadmap artifact that translates a justice-centered product vision into measurable goals, success metrics, and a 12–24 month implementation plan
