Introduces core WordPress concepts, site setup, content workflows, and foundational theme and plugin customization. Students will register domains and hosting, navigate the dashboard to create and organize content, install and modify themes/plugins, and apply basic CSS and template techniques to prepare for advanced development and deployment in later units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the WordPress ecosystem and platform options by comparing WordPress.com, self-hosted (WordPress.org), and multisite configurations and recommending a hosting/platform solution based on cost, control, scalability, and project requirements
- Demonstrate proficiency navigating the WordPress dashboard and core content workflows by logging in, configuring permalinks, creating posts and pages with blocks (including the Columns block), inserting and optimizing images, and organizing content using categories
- Apply theme and plugin management and basic customization techniques by locating, installing, and activating themes and plugins, modifying theme styles with CSS and child themes, changing background graphics, and creating a category-based post template
- Evaluate content structure and extensibility tools by using Custom Post Type UI, Hybrid Core concepts, and template hierarchy to design site architecture and determine when to use multisite or other extensibility approaches for a given project
