Test Preparation and Performance Skills

This unit strengthens candidates’ written, reading, and practical test skills required for the NYC Police Officer exam and the hiring process. Lessons focus on reading comprehension, grammar and spelling, incident report and essay writing, personal history statement completion, test-taking strategies, test‑day logistics, and physical readiness to prepare students for the final skills unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze NYC-style reading comprehension passages and incident report prompts to identify main ideas, inferences, supporting details, and sequence of events, and correctly answer related practice questions in timed sessions.
• Apply grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules to edit sentences and select correct multiple-choice answers, and use process-of-elimination strategies to choose answers when uncertain during practice tests.
• Demonstrate the ability to plan, draft, and revise required written materials—personal history statement, law enforcement essay, and incident reports—meeting content and formatting expectations and completing practice pieces within prescribed time limits.
• Evaluate and implement test-day readiness behaviors, including nutrition, basic strength warm-ups, arrival procedures, and participation in simulated test events, to improve on-test performance and reduce preventable errors.
