Targeted ACT Skills and Strategies

This unit deepens students’ mastery of high-yield ACT math concepts (ratios, proportions, exponents, logarithms, geometry, functions, and order of operations) while strengthening reading and science passage strategies and English-language conventions. Students will also develop and practice test-taking techniques—timing, strategic guessing, scoring, and study routines—through timed practice and collaborative review to prepare for the final unit’s full-length test simulations.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and solve multistep ACT-style math problems involving ratios, proportions, quadrilaterals, exponents, logarithms, functions, polygons, circles, and order of operations, and accurately explain solution steps on classroom practice assessments.
• Apply targeted reading strategies to comparative and experimental passages by identifying main ideas, supporting evidence, author perspective, and intended structure, then answer related multiple-choice items under timed conditions.
• Demonstrate effective ACT test-preparation and test-taking skills by creating a personalized study and timing plan, practicing full-length timed sections, and using strategic guessing and answer-choice immersion techniques during simulations.
• Evaluate and improve written English and argumentation skills by translating English into mathematical expressions, revising passages for standard grammar and clarity, and composing or defending brief perspective-based responses that align with ACT English and writing expectations.
