RC Systems and Workshop Safety

This unit covers selection, installation, and testing of remote-control (RC) and hybrid RC/autonomous control systems, plus evaluation of parts suppliers and procurement strategies. It emphasizes hands-on workshop safety and best practices for tools, adhesives, soldering, and electrical precautions to prepare students for more complex robot construction projects.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze RC system architectures and compare at least three supplier options (component, cost, lead time, and documentation) to justify a parts selection for a class robot project.
• Apply installation and integration procedures to wire, configure, and bench-test an RC or hybrid RC/autonomous control system in a classroom-built robot to meet specified performance criteria.
• Demonstrate proper use of hand and power tools, soldering equipment, adhesives, and wire-cutting tools by completing instructor-graded proficiency checks while following personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety checklists.
• Evaluate mechanical and electrical hazards in a workshop or robot assembly (including pinch points, slip/trip risks, charged capacitors, and improper AC practices) and propose/implement corrective actions to mitigate at least five identified risks.
