Production Roles and Processes

This unit introduces students to the creative, technical, and business roles that collaborate to move a musical from page to stage. Through study of directors, designers, choreographers, ensemble leadership, understudies, and production logistics (including history, ticketing, venues, and media appearances), students build the vocabulary, analytical skills, and practical planning habits needed for successful rehearsal and performance work in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the responsibilities and interdependencies of key production roles (director, choreographer, dance captain, designers, stage management, understudies, and ensemble) and map those roles to phases of a musical’s creation and run
• Demonstrate use of professional theatre vocabulary and industry practices by participating in role-based scenarios (casting, tech rehearsal, marketing/ticketing, and media appearance preparation) and producing a brief glossary or script breakdown
• Evaluate set, lighting, and costume design choices for a selected scene by justifying how technical elements support narrative, performer safety, and budgetary constraints and by recommending at least two feasible modifications
• Apply a step-by-step production timeline for a short musical vignette that includes casting, rehearsal milestones, technical rehearsals, performance logistics, and contingency planning for understudies and media obligations
