Practical Herd Management

This unit develops hands‑on skills for day‑to‑day goat husbandry, focusing on feeding, milking, basic health monitoring, sanitation, identification, and low‑cost infrastructure. It also covers practical business and legal considerations (pricing, contracts, showing, and alternative uses) to prepare students for advanced production and management topics in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate safe and effective feeding, kid rearing, milking (including motorized milking machine use), and milk‑handling and sanitation practices to maintain product quality and animal welfare
• Analyze herd health and reproductive indicators by performing basic fecal analysis, recognizing pregnancy and parturition needs, and applying appropriate castration and supervision decisions
• Construct and maintain simple production infrastructure and identification systems by building a milk stand and hay feeder, implementing microchipping or tattooing protocols, and preparing animals for transport or home introduction
• Evaluate economic and legal aspects of small ruminant operations by estimating costs, pricing animals and services (e.g., buck service), using contracts to manage risk, and assessing marketing options including showing and whole‑animal utilization
