Police Exam Skills and Preparation

This unit develops the practical test-taking, written-communication, basic math, and personal-preparation skills required for POST and agency entrance exams. Students practice reading comprehension, spelling, observation/memory, incident reporting, essay writing, and fitness/sleep strategies while preparing application and personal history materials.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common POST and agency written-test item types (reading comprehension, spelling, observation/memory, incident reports, and essay prompts) and apply targeted strategies to improve accuracy on practice items.
• Apply basic quantitative skills (percentages, averages, and interpreting bar data) to solve test-style questions and accurately complete job-application numerical sections.
• Demonstrate effective written communication by producing a scored practice incident report and a timed essay that meet POST scoring criteria for organization, clarity, grammar, and spelling.
• Evaluate personal readiness for the hiring process by creating a preparatory plan that addresses physical conditioning, sleep hygiene, psychological-evaluation expectations, and accurate completion of application and personal history statements.
