This unit orients students to the full scope of the police officer selection process, including how to read the Notice of Examination, the formats and content of written test sections (math, reading comprehension, grammar, memory/observation, incident reports), and required application documents (essay, Personal History Statement). Students will also learn about physical ability and medical evaluation requirements, professional comportment, and preparatory routines to transition into skill-focused exam practice in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze a Notice of Examination (NOE) and related application materials to identify eligibility requirements, deadlines, test components, and steps needed to create a personalized test-preparation timeline.
- Apply targeted test-taking strategies under timed conditions to accurately solve sample items in mathematics, reading comprehension, grammar, memory/observation, and POST-style incident report questions.
- Demonstrate the ability to produce law-enforcement-specific written documents by drafting a clear, correctly formatted incident report, a POST essay, and a complete Personal History Statement that meet established clarity and completeness criteria.
