Planning for Long-Term Financial Life

This capstone unit integrates taxes, insurance, long-term saving, career decisions, and professional recordkeeping to prepare students for financial independence after high school. Learners synthesize filing practices, retirement and insurance choices, and career-path strategies (college, trade, military, service) to build actionable plans and portfolios.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how tax concepts (tax brackets, adjusted gross income, state variations, refunds) affect a young person’s net income and determine the most appropriate filing approach for at least two real-world scenarios.
• Apply effective documentation and filing practices by assembling a complete tax folder, using a free filing tool to produce a mock return, and identifying when to involve a trusted adult or advisor.
• Demonstrate planning for long-term financial security by comparing retirement account growth projections, selecting appropriate insurance types, and creating a consistent savings strategy with a 5–10 year projection.
• Evaluate postsecondary and career pathways (college, trade school, military, AmeriCorps), negotiate an employment/aid offer, and produce a professional portfolio or multimedia highlights plus a mentor/advisor engagement plan.
