This unit introduces foundational knowledge and hands-on skills for personal computers and laptops, covering hardware components, safe assembly and power management, peripherals, basic storage and backup practices, and an introduction to networking and security. It prepares students with the practical competencies and conceptual framework needed for more advanced system configuration, troubleshooting, and support in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate safe assembly, startup, shutdown, and basic configuration of desktop PCs and laptops, including correct handling of batteries, power bricks, and travel/storage accessories
- Analyze internal and external hardware components (motherboard, CPU, RAM, mass storage, graphics, ports, input devices) to determine their functions and compatibility within PCs and laptops
- Apply basic networking and security concepts to configure and explain local network file access, Internet connectivity, and common protective measures such as firewalls and Windows Security Center settings
- Demonstrate data management and protection procedures by selecting appropriate mass storage options, performing backup/restoration tasks, and following safe handling and maintenance practices
