Microphone Techniques and Multitrack Recording

This unit explores microphone types, polar patterns, source preparation, and practical placement strategies for common instruments and voices in a home studio. Students will also learn multitrack recording workflows—session setup, gain staging, and track organization—to capture clean, usable tracks for later mixing and production.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the characteristics, polar patterns, and typical use cases of common microphone types (dynamic, condenser, ribbon) and justify selection for specific instruments or vocal sources
• Apply microphone placement and source-preparation techniques to achieve optimal tone, minimize bleed and noise, and adapt approaches for acoustic guitar, electric guitar amp, bass, drums/percussion, and vocals
• Demonstrate a multitrack recording workflow in a DAW, including session setup, input routing, gain staging, take management, and basic comping/track labeling for efficient editing
• Evaluate recorded tracks for clarity, phase issues, and noise, and adjust microphone choice, placement, or signal chain (including use of DI where appropriate) to improve final track quality
