Managing Classroom & Professional Practices

This unit prepares first‑year teachers to manage day‑to‑day classroom challenges and their professional responsibilities. Learners focus on equitable classroom routines, behavior management, family and staff communication, student supports and referrals, and sustained professional development—building on foundational pedagogy and preparing for advanced planning and assessment in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common first‑year classroom scenarios (e.g., misbehavior, unprepared students, observations, being a floater) and select evidence‑based management strategies that promote equity and student safety
• Apply effective communication and collaboration techniques for working with parents, colleagues, and support professionals, including conducting parent conferences and initiating referrals for intervention following school protocols
• Demonstrate professional practices by creating a personal professional action plan that addresses dress, online presence, campus navigation, emergency responses, and protocols for handling embarrassing incidents
• Evaluate models of confrontation and disciplinary escalation to determine appropriate times to involve administrators and to design a reflective growth plan for ongoing professional development
