IoT and Cyber Risk Management

This unit examines security risks, regulatory frameworks, and defense strategies across Internet of Things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems, including considerations for smart cities and emerging technologies such as quantum computing. Students learn to apply standards (e.g., NIST and SEC guidance), employ cryptographic and digital tools, and evaluate organizational and cross‑sector risk management approaches that support economic resilience.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze IoT and cyber-physical system architectures to identify common vulnerabilities, threat vectors, and high-value targets in smart cities and converged digital/physical environments
• Apply the NIST Framework and relevant regulatory requirements (including recent SEC cybersecurity rules and industry standards) to map controls and assess an organization’s cybersecurity posture
• Demonstrate selection and practical use of encryption, cryptographic techniques, and digital conversion tools to mitigate identified risks in representative scenarios
• Evaluate organizational risk management strategies, government–industry cooperation models, and the impact of emerging technologies (e.g., quantum computing) on resilience and long-term cybersecurity planning
