Foundations of YouTube Production

This unit introduces students to the end-to-end video-making process with emphasis on preproduction and basic production skills for YouTube content. Students learn to choose and justify cameras, styles, shots, and microphones; develop ideas into structured scripts and shot lists; and capture clean dialogue audio to prepare for production and editing in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the stages of the video-making process and create a project timeline that sequences preproduction, production, and postproduction tasks for a short YouTube video
• Apply equipment knowledge to select and justify appropriate cameras, microphones, and accessories based on style, shot type, and production constraints, and assemble a kit list for a planned shoot
• Demonstrate the ability to develop an idea into a structured video by writing a timed script, composing dialogue, and producing a detailed shot list that specifies shot type and camera movement
• Evaluate basic audio capture techniques by recording dialogue with different microphone setups, comparing results, and identifying best practices for clean, intelligible voice tracks
