Foundations of Web and App Coding

This unit introduces students to core web development concepts, common programming languages, and the tools and processes used to plan and prototype web and mobile applications. Students will practice HTML and CSS structure, set up development environments, compare language paradigms (Ruby, Python, others), and use credible research and reference resources to define project goals and workflows that prepare them for building full applications in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the structure and purpose of HTML and CSS by identifying semantic elements and applying styles to create an accessible, structured webpage
• Apply appropriate development tools and workflows to set up a basic project environment and implement a simple, functioning single-page web application using HTML, CSS, and client-side scripting
• Demonstrate knowledge of programming language structure by comparing Ruby, Python, and other language families and selecting the best language or tool for a given project goal
• Evaluate app development processes and research sources by defining a project goal, outlining development steps, and using coding-reference websites and credible resources to plan a web or mobile prototype
