Foundations of Scrum and Agile

This unit introduces core Scrum concepts, roles, events, and artifacts and situates Scrum within broader agile and Lean practices. Students will learn to create basic Scrum artifacts (product roadmap, backlog, release plan), participate in key ceremonies, and evaluate Scrum’s fit across industries and stakeholder needs to prepare for deeper application and project work in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the Scrum framework by identifying its roles, events, and artifacts and contrasting Scrum principles with traditional Waterfall project management
• Demonstrate proficiency in core Scrum practices by conducting a simulated Daily Scrum, building a team task board, and producing a basic product roadmap and release plan
• Apply backlog decomposition and estimation techniques (e.g., user stories, story points, planning poker) to develop a prioritized product backlog and preliminary release schedule
• Evaluate Scrum’s benefits, limitations, and stakeholder impacts across multiple industry contexts (e.g., software, healthcare, publishing, marketing) and recommend appropriate adaptations
