Foundations of Everyday Law

This unit introduces foundational legal concepts and procedures students are likely to encounter in daily life, including the sources of law, civil and criminal distinctions, court structures, contracts, dispute resolution, attorneys, family-law basics, and employment-related legal issues. It builds on introductory knowledge and prepares students for deeper procedural practice and client-centered application in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze sources of law and distinguish between civil and criminal matters by identifying appropriate court systems, jurisdictions, and typical remedies for given scenarios.
• Apply principles of contract formation, basic litigation steps, and alternative dispute-resolution options to evaluate rights, defenses, and likely outcomes in common consumer and employment disputes.
• Demonstrate how to locate, evaluate, retain, and communicate with legal counsel by explaining attorney qualifications, fee arrangements, the attorney-client relationship, and remedies for unsatisfactory representation.
• Evaluate common family- and employment-law situations (e.g., marriage, separation, custody, adoption, guardianship, abuse protections, job applications, and conditional offers) and recommend appropriate next steps, including when to seek legal assistance.
