Drone Foundations: Safety and Operations

This unit introduces core concepts of unmanned aerial systems, focusing on safe setup, basic flight controls, regulatory requirements, and introductory aerial imaging. Students develop foundational procedural and ethical habits that prepare them for advanced flight planning, payload integration, and professional applications in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Demonstrate safe drone setup, handling, and basic flight control procedures by completing an unboxing, conducting a pre-flight checklist, executing a supervised short flight in a chosen training location, and performing post-flight maintenance to minimize propeller and equipment hazards.
• Apply United States regulatory and operational requirements (e.g., airspace rules, Know Before You Fly guidance, and distinctions between recreational and commercial use) to create compliant flight plans and maintain a flight log for at least two scenarios.
• Analyze camera capabilities, lighting conditions, and stabilization techniques to plan, capture, import, and organize aerial images and video for practical use cases such as real estate and community documentation.
• Evaluate ethical, privacy, and community considerations related to drone operations by identifying risks (e.g., spying, military use), navigating relevant online communities and social media responsibly, and proposing strategies to address stakeholder concerns.
