Contemporary Musical Theatre Capstone

This capstone unit surveys musical theatre from the 1980s through the present, using representative songs, performers, and production roles to illustrate stylistic and industry change. Students synthesize historical analysis with ensemble practice and professional readiness, and assess the field’s adaptations to major disruptions such as the COVID-19 shutdown.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze stylistic, cultural, and industry shifts in musical theatre from the 1980s to the present, citing specific songs, performers, and movements discussed in the unit
• Apply ensemble and production concepts by interpreting the roles of the conductor and orchestra and rehearsing/performing excerpts that demonstrate historical performance practice
• Demonstrate professional readiness by preparing and presenting polished audition materials, a concise professional narrative, and strategies for entering the musical theatre workforce
• Evaluate the short- and long-term impacts of major industry disruptions (including the COVID-19 shutdown) and propose adaptive approaches for performance, audience engagement, and career resilience
