Clinical Terminology Capstone

This unit synthesizes medical terminology across body systems with emphasis on surgeries, pharmacology, radiology/diagnostic testing, and pathology. Students will apply advanced word-building skills and professional reference tools to interpret clinical documentation and prepare for continued study or entry-level clinical communication.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze clinical reports and case scenarios to identify and interpret surgical, radiologic, and diagnostic terminology across multiple body systems
• Apply root words, prefixes, suffixes, and anatomical vocabulary to construct and decode complex medical terms related to procedures and pharmacologic agents
• Demonstrate proficient use of professional reference resources (e.g., Taber’s, Sloane’s, Quick Study, medical mnemonics) to verify definitions, spelling, and abbreviations in clinical contexts
• Evaluate correlations between diagnostic findings, common pathologies, and pharmacologic treatments to justify likely diagnoses and communication strategies for at least three body systems
