Clinical and Administrative Health IT

This unit examines specialty clinical systems, point-of-care devices, administrative applications, and the underlying infrastructure that support care delivery and business operations. Students evaluate deployment models, integration points, and workflow considerations to select and configure interoperable solutions that meet clinician needs and regulatory requirements, building on foundational concepts and preparing for capstone integration.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze clinician workflows and point-of-care requirements to recommend appropriate specialty clinical systems (e.g., maternal/infant, radiology/PACS, laboratory, pharmacy, cardiology, emergency) and third-party drug/toxicology databases.
• Evaluate deployment and infrastructure options—including hosted vs. local solutions, server architectures, remote access, single sign-on, and communication systems (email, phone, productivity apps)—for scalability, security, and continuity of care.
• Demonstrate configuration and integration strategies for administrative applications (practice management, billing/payer portals, accounting, payroll) and clinical decision support to ensure accurate data exchange and streamlined workflows.
• Apply standards-based approaches to design interoperable encounter, prescribing, eligibility, and registry workflows that produce correct prescription labels, encounter forms, and reporting outputs while supporting clinician usability and quality measures.
