Botnet Behavior and Detection Signals

This unit examines botnet motivations, lifecycle stages, and the technical signals they leave on the network and application layers. Students learn to analyze HTTP headers and other telemetry, understand CAPTCHA- and AI-enabled botnet capabilities, design ethical data collection strategies, and assess defensive approaches to prepare for operational detection and response.

• Analyze relationships between botnet incentives, sophistication, and market forces to predict attacker goals and likely capabilities
• Apply HTTP header inspection and traffic-telemetry techniques to identify botnet indicators and distinguish automated from human-originated behavior
