BIM Information, Process, Collaboration

This unit examines BIM as an information-driven, collaborative process: parametric modeling, object libraries, standards (IFC), federated models, and the tools that enable analysis, data transformation, and digital construction. Students learn to organize information requirements, build a BIM business case, address legal and contractual implications, and apply collaboration and model-management strategies that prepare them for advanced implementation and workflows in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how information drives BIM workflows by comparing parametric modeling, object libraries, IFC interoperability, and federated model approaches for lifecycle data exchange
• Apply collaboration and model-management techniques to organize, maintain, and share model information, including creating initial information requirements and federated workflows
• Demonstrate the ability to produce core BIM delivery artifacts—such as elements of a BIM execution plan, a concise business case, and identified legal/contractual information requirements—for a sample project
• Evaluate BIM analysis tools, data-transformation methods, and organizational adoption strategies to estimate potential savings, overcome implementation barriers, and recommend appropriate approaches for projects of differing scale
