AI Applications in Extreme Contexts

This culminating unit explores advanced applications of artificial intelligence in demanding domains such as space operations, healthcare, and planetary-scale systems. Students synthesize prior learning to design, evaluate, and secure AI systems that integrate sensors, robotics, telepresence, and generative models while anticipating human impacts and regulatory concerns.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze trade-offs in deploying AI solutions in extreme and safety-critical environments (e.g., space, planetary, medical) by comparing at least three domain-specific case studies and identifying constraints on perception, hardware, and autonomy
• Apply integration strategies for sensors, hardware acceleration, and low-level system interfaces to improve AI perception and telepresence capabilities, producing a prototype architecture or detailed design diagram
• Evaluate generative AI applications for usability, error modes, commercialization potential, and data security risks, and recommend mitigations for bias, adversarial inputs, and privacy concerns
• Demonstrate collaborative human–AI workflows by designing operational plans that combine robotic automation and human professionals, and propose workforce transition strategies to address professional disruption and ethical/regulatory requirements
