EHR Deployment and Operations

This unit synthesizes technical, regulatory, and operational skills needed to plan, deploy, and support electronic health record (EHR) systems in ambulatory practices. Students apply sizing and infrastructure principles, configure systems for compliance, evaluate vendor and pricing options, and practice coordination and troubleshooting strategies to maintain clinical workflows.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze practice size and operational needs to produce a detailed EHR deployment plan specifying network architecture, servers, workstations, and task assignments
• Apply applicable regulatory and compliance requirements to configure EHR systems and produce documentation demonstrating adherence to privacy, security, and reporting standards
• Evaluate EHR vendors, pricing and computing models (cloud vs. on‑premises), and contract terms to recommend a procurement and partnership strategy for a given practice scenario
• Demonstrate deployment and operational skills by coordinating with physicians and clinicians, using deployment toolkits, and executing troubleshooting and maintenance procedures to minimize disruption to workflows
