Crafting Acts: Middle, Climax, Resolution

This unit guides students through shaping the middle, climactic turning points, and satisfying resolutions of a play, while addressing unique considerations for musical theatre. Students will practice escalating conflict, integrating musical beats, soliciting feedback, and making disciplined revisions to produce a reader-ready draft.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the function of the middle, climax, and resolution in both student and published plays by identifying inciting incidents, midpoint turns, and causal links between scenes
• Apply techniques for escalating conflict and raising stakes by writing or revising at least two pivotal scenes that clarify character objectives, obstacles, and choices leading to the climax
• Demonstrate integration of musical elements into dramatic structure by producing a short musical beat sheet and a sample scene that shows song placement, transitions, and how lyrics or musical moments advance plot and character
• Evaluate peer and instructor feedback to produce a revised, reader-ready draft and accompanying packet (one-page synopsis, character list, scene breakdown), and document dramaturgical justifications for key revisions
